What is Data Replication ?

Data replication is the creation of an image-based backup of an organization’s server.


Rather than a backup of individual files, our solution creates a complete copy of your server. This includes all applications and even the operating system that runs on the server.


Our solution uses industry-leading software to provide a backup of both physical and virtual servers. This is then stored within Akita’s secure cloud infrastructure. We backup for up to 14 days’ of data which covers all files. That means even those that have been deleted during the backup period.


Data backups are stored in one of Akita’s highly-secure, ISO-compliant data centers. With this comes the option to hold a further copy in another geographically-separate data centre should you require.


Our data replication service is therefore an ideal part of an organization’s disaster recovery or business continuity plan.

Benefits of Image-Level Backups

Every organization should back up its data, and any number of events can trigger the need to access backups.

Recovering after a ransomware attack, hardware failure or natural disaster can require a complete server reload and its contents. This can be either on the same or new hardware or in the cloud.

If organizations are using a file backup (rather than an image-based one), it can take as much as three days to reload a server’s operating systems and any relevant applications. This is before the server is then ready to receive the backed-up files. For most organizations, this is downtime they cannot afford.

In contrast, as data replication uses an image-based backup, the entire server can be reloaded to operate in the cloud within just a couple of hours. In terms of disaster recovery, businesses can be back up and running in no time, working as if nothing has happened. Meanwhile, if you choose to go back to a physical server, this can be prepared in the background with no impact on your work.

Should an organization need to recover just a few files (as a result of deletion or file corruption), our data replication solution can facilitate this as well.

What Types Of Data Replication Do You Offer?

ETG offers three types of data replication:
• Full replication: This involves replicating the entire dataset from the source to the target system. This can take time to complete.
• Incremental replication: After an initial complete backup is taken, incremental replication updates changes or updates made to the source data since.
• Snapshot replication: This point-in-time solution takes a copy of the source data from a chosen point. Organizations may want this if they are about to undertake important system changes.

How Can Data Replication Be Used For Disaster Recovery?

Data replication is commonly used for disaster recovery purposes. By replicating data from a primary site to a secondary site or backup location, we can ensure data availability and recovery in the event of a disaster or system failure. In case of an outage, the replicated data can be quickly restored (typically to the cloud) minimizing business downtime.

How Do You Ensure The Integrity Of Data During Replication?

ETG’s infrastructure engineers monitor the completion of all data replication events, checking where there are any signs of issues. As part of our proactive IT support, we’ll also run restore tests on backups to ensure that they are error-free.

How Do You Ensure Data Replication Is Secure?

As part of the data replication process, all information is encrypted prior to transit. It’s then communicated via a secure VPN tunnel to one of our heavily-protected data centers. If required, data can be further replicated to the second of our data centers for complete peace of mind.
